Considering laser hair removal? Ask these 3 questions.

Many times clients have pulled me aside to comment on how pleased they are with their laser hair removal results at Skin Bar. As a spa owner it is the best compliment I can get. Our whole team at Skin Bar works hard every day to please our clients and we know happy clients start with great results.

When my clients comment on their great experience I always want to know what sets us apart in their mind. There are usually two versions of this story. The first involves clients that came to Skin Bar for their first laser experience, but found a “great Groupon deal” at another spa and left to save money. After all- laser hair removal is laser hair removal, right? Unfortunately, for these clients they found out the hard way that it’s not!

After the first appointment at a new spa many of the clients I spoke to said they may have well just flushed a few hundred bucks down the drain. I commonly hear the staff was “not well trained” or “friendly”, the results were “poor” or they had a bad reaction. In the end they came back because they wanted a reliable result from an educated specialist and were willing to pay a few extra bucks for a sure thing!

The second version of the story goes like this; “I have had laser hair removal at many different spas and usually search for the best price. I was recommended to Skin Bar and now I have several memberships.” In my own personal experience after I have a service that exceeds my expectation I tend to go back. Everyone likes to visit a spa where everyone knows your name. There is comfort in being treated by the same expert, especially for more intimate areas. But more importantly, that expert over time has accumulated critical knowledge about your skin and personal needs to ensure the best results.

I just had 2 of these conversations yesterday and while it is all still fresh in my mind I wanted to blog about it. Today, I would like to share a bit of our accumulated knowledge with all our readers. Below are the top 3 things you should consider when searching for a laser spa. We recommend printing this blog post and taking it to your consultations to make sure you evaluate all 3 areas thoroughly. We have left some space for you to write the name of the spa you are visiting and a few lines under each question for notes.

Spa name:

Education and experience

How long have your laser specialists been performing laser hair removal? How many treatments have they performed? (Should have a minimum of 2 yrs. Experience and over 1,000 successful treatments.)

Who will be performing my treatment and can I request a specific laser specialist for all my treatments? (Some spas are first come first served and do not allow requests.)

What is your rate of adverse reactions? Do you have a protocol for managing adverse reactions? (Anyone who has been performing laser for more than 2 yrs. is probably not being honest if they tell you they have never seen an adverse reaction of some sort. You want to know how they handle it when they do.)

Technology

Do you use laser or IPL? (If the answer is I don’t know, you’re in the wrong place. If the answer is IPL you are likely to get disappointing results. You should chose a spa that uses only laser technology for hair removal.)

Do you have laser technology that is safe for all skin types? If so what are they? (The answer should always be yes. The next question is more important- quality laser spas use both the Alex and YAG lasers.)

How often are your lasers serviced? (Commonly forgotten but incredibly important to ask. A laser that is not serviced regularly does not deliver good results. Lasers should be serviced twice a year and upgraded every two years.)

Price

Do you have a pricing list? (A pricing list indicates that the spa is professional and has evaluated the cost of it’s services. If there is no written pricing you could become a victim of unscrupulous sales tactics to extract the most from your wallet.)

Do you offer packages or memberships? (Most spas offer packages. And purchasing a package usually comes with a discount when you pay the full amount up front. Memberships are another great way to save money. They are discounted and you pay as you go.)

Do you offer any additional benefits or add-ons with purchase? (Typically when you buy a package or membership you get free touch ups and service upgrades that could add up to hundreds of dollars. Be sure to ask.)

Of course there are lot’s of options for laser hair removal in New York City. If you are considering laser hair removal we hope you will consider Skin Bar NYC for your laser needs. Consultations are always complimentary for new clients. Come in and meet with one of our laser specialists today! 212-889-1175.
