DIY Skin Tips

11 Tips to ensure you never waste skin care products again

How much product is enough? Figuring out how much of a product to use on your face is always a struggle, even for us pros. We get lots of questions about whether you’re using too much or too little of the items you’ve come to love. Do you go with what you’ve heard and read or what feels best on your face…? Wonder no longer we’ve got the answers for you!! Let’s break it down!

Moisturizer and SPF– Quarter size.

(We LOVE SPFs that have moisturizers in them already, check out IMAGE Skincare Prevention +) This is enough product to cover face, neck and ears, yes ears. Protection from the sun’s harmful rays is the number one way to prevent pre mature aging. Add moisture to the protection and you’ve got yourself a great 2 for 1 product! You can add a little extra to cover your décolleté and backs of hands which are also prone to ageing and sun exposure.

Cleansers- Vary depending on the type so we’ve broken it down even more.

Foaming Cleanser- Golf ball size (usually 1 to 2 pumps)

Foaming cleansers are great for those who tend to be a bit oilier as well as those who are acne-prone, usually teenage skin. Some foaming cleansers can be on the harsh side so be careful if you have sensitive or dry skin.

Gel Cleanser- Quarter Size

Gel cleansers remove surface oil and acne causing bacteria and are designed for skin types with those concerns. Since gel cleansers work best with water, dampen your skin prior to using, massage in circular motion for 30 to 45 seconds and rinse with warm water.

Cream Cleanser/ Milky Cleanser- Quarter Size

Cream and milky cleansers are great for dry and dehydrated skin. They add moisture to your skin and are great at restoring moisture post peel or any other exfoliation treatment or for when you just want the extra boost of hydration!

Night Cream- Quarter Size

Night creams help lock in moisture and designed with the best active ingredients to restore your skin while you sleep. I like to be more generous with my cream and apply over face, neck, décolleté and hands to make sure my skin can take in as many and as much of the ingredients and keep me looking younger longer. Massage cream into skin lightly helping to stimulate blood flow.

Under Eye Cream- ½ pea size for each eye

Under eye creams are life savers for aging skin, fine lines and wrinkles, dry and sensitive skin. Apply in a gentle tapping motion with ring fingers on orbital bone moving towards the nose, moving over eyebrows completing a full circle until product is dissolved.

Exfoliator- Quarter Size

Exfoliators are great for sloughing off dead skin leaving it fresh, soft and glowing. Massage around face in circular motions making sure to not be too rough. You can exfoliate 1 to 2 times weekly. Include the neck, décolleté and backs of hands to limit signs of aging.

Oil Absorbing Masques- Quarter Size

Oil absorbing masques are great for oily skin as well as acneic skin. They are great at pulling out impurities from the surface so make sure to only leave on for only ten minutes, if you leave on longer impurities may be pushed back into the skin, and rinse with warm water. Spot treatments are great way to target specific areas without over drying the rest of your face. Best to use no more than once a week.

Calming, Hydrating, Brightening Masques- Quarter Size

These masques are for all skin types. Designed to calm redness, hydrate skin and improve the overall glow of your skin. My favorite way to do these is in the shower! Cleanse, apply masque and continue on with your daily shower, rinse before getting out and pat dry. Always follow masques with a moisturizer to lock in all the benefits your skin just gained.

Serums- Pea size

Serums are the at-home skin care routine splurge that make your treatments last. They help keep everything firm, moisturize, protect and slow down signs of aging. Tap into (don’t rub) as they are designed to spread once under the skin. Focus on troublesome areas such as wrinkles in forehead, smile/expression lines and under eyes.
